Most patients we work with need a medical visa. There are two routes, and which one you use depends on your passport. The notes below reflect the Indian government’s e-visa portal and Indian embassy pages as we read them in October 2026. Rules, fees and processing times change, so confirm everything on the official sources before you apply.
Route 1: the online e-Medical visa
The e-Medical visa is applied for online and is available only to nationals of the countries on the e-visa list. Among Arab countries the list includes Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, the UAE, Jordan, Palestine, Morocco and Mauritania. When we checked, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Iraq, Lebanon, Yemen, Sudan, Libya, Algeria and Syria were not on the list, so patients from those countries normally apply for a regular medical visa instead (Route 2). Always check the current list for your nationality.
- You apply at least 4 days before you arrive, and up to 120 days ahead.
- The main documents are a scan of your passport’s photo page and a letter from the Indian hospital, on its letterhead, giving your name, nationality, passport number and the planned admission date.
- Fees depend on nationality, are non-refundable, and card payments carry a bank charge.
- Entry is through the airports and seaports designated for e-visa holders.
The portal describes the validity of the e-Medical visa in two different ways (one year in one place, 60 days from first arrival in its FAQ), so check the current wording before you plan a long stay.
Route 2: a regular medical visa from the Indian mission
If your nationality is not on the e-visa list, you apply through the Indian embassy, consulate or its authorised visa application centre. Requirements differ slightly between missions, but they usually ask for:
- a passport valid for at least six months, with blank pages;
- the hospital’s invitation letter, signed and stamped, with your details;
- passport photographs and the completed application;
- proof that you can pay for treatment and your stay.
Some visas valid for more than 180 days require registration within 14 days of arrival, so ask the mission whether this applies to you.
Family members and attendants
A patient can bring up to two attendants, who apply for a Medical Attendant visa linked to the patient’s visa. It is normally granted to a close relative, family member, friend or carer, and attendants are expected to travel with the patient. Tell your coordinator early how many people will travel.
Where we help, and where we cannot
Once a hospital has reviewed your reports and accepted your case, we ask it for the invitation letter and tell you exactly what to attach. We guide you through the form, but we do not issue visas and cannot promise approval. That decision rests with the Indian authorities.
Before you book flights
- Wait for the visa to be approved before buying non-refundable tickets.
- Check that your passport is valid for at least six months.
- Keep digital and printed copies of the visa, the hospital letter and your reports.
